Perhaps one of the most exciting things in life is the pursuit of something better. Every so often, I get young aspiring videographers who ask me for tips on how they can improve their own videography techniques. What's flattering is how that question comes about! In a nutshell, when I tell people I'm Jippidy's "webmaster guy", they somehow associate me as some sort of expert in videography. I'll admit, I'm not an expert in videography, but I do know some things about the industry and the process. I basically give them an answer along the lines of ".. you must become disciplined-enough to train yourself or take professional-level training courses; whatever way you choose, always try to surround yourself with successful people in your field who already possess the skills you're striving for; and lastly, practice practice practice."

(take your videos from something like this.. )

( .. to something more professional like this!)

If you're like one of the aspiring videographers I often meet or, if you want to be like one of the many amateur-turn-professional-videographers out there, keep in mind some of the following skills-sets. These skills range from planning, production, editing and audio work; knowing a little of each will help you become a more well-rounded videographer.

  • (pre/post) production: funding, storyboarding, scriptwriting, microphone selection, interviewing, location scouting, video distribution channels
  • lighting: 2 point and 3 point lighting
  • shooting: camera placement, multi-camera shooting, dramatic angles, use of the green screen
  • editing: time-remapping, advanced trimming features, multi-camera editing, special effects
  • audio editing: altering length, speed control, volume control, noise reduction, equalization, compression, audio files, audio effects/filters

Whether it's personal or work-related, striving for something better, and getting close to achieving it, can easily become a positive form of addiction to the pursuit itself. As you get closer to becoming a better videographer, you'll be addicted to learning all the new techniques and improving on old ones. Those who remain positively addicted usually have the most success. And maybe you'll be lucky enough to spot one of our job listings around the country AND respond; at the rate we're growing here at Jippidy, expect to see the headline "Videographers Always Wanted".

With a good mix of web design and graphic design knowledge, I bring a technical yet creative spin to Jippidy. Every so often, you'll see blogs about technical-related issues that I try to explain in layman's terms. And other times, you'll see me nitpick about color schemes, graphic design, and print design. If you have questions about embedding videos or web design techniques, I'm probably the best person to ask in the group. So please ask away!
