When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. ~Mark Twain, "Old Times on the Mississippi" Atlantic Monthly, 1874
Dad – we love him, we respect him, we adore him, we are thankful for all that he’s done for us. Yes, at times he talks too much, he thinks he knows EVERYTHING, and he’s NEVER wrong about anything, but we love him just the same. And this Sunday, we take the time to show him that we appreciate him.
I've put together a list of ten businesses Jippidy has filmed that I think could serve as a good way to show your appreciation this Father’s Day. I’ve even included the videos and special discounts where applicable for your viewing convenience, so take a look. And no, none of them sell ties, so think outside the box!
- You know how your Pops has been talking about getting “back in shape” for the last few years now? (Riiigghhht!) Well, he’ll have no more excuses once you sign him up for membership at K-ONE Fitness, a full-service weight training and cardio fitness facility, with a special focus on the various forms of Mixed Martial Arts training. Help him channel his inner Rampage Jackson and book him for a class!
- Award-winning Japanese cuisine + premium sake + live jazz in an intimate venue = an awesome night out for your old man. Check out Yoshi’s in San Francisco if you want to see Lalah Hathaway, or visit Yoshi’s in Oakland if you’d rather see Cassandra Wilson this Sunday. Go for dinner, stay for the show – no seat is a bad seat.
- Who ever said a visit to the spa is just for women?! Pops is getting older, his skin is starting to show signs of his age, so book him an appointment for a male facial from Inspired Skin Care. Trust me, plenty of guys worry about taking care of their skin, we just don’t talk about it=)
- Give Dad the gift of nostalgia! Let him relive his days as a young party animal by taking him to dinner at Mas Sake. Not only is the food tasty and the drinks delicious, but the music is loud and the staff is, how should I put this – visually appealing;-) Get your Dad a free sake bomb by mentioning the video. And Sundays are all you can eat sushi for $25!
- Craving some seafood? Build up his appetite by taking Dad for a stroll in Golden Gate Park, and end the walk at Pacific Catch’s 9th Avenue location for fresh seafood - think Tuna Poke or Miso Glazed Salmon - and a sea of cocktail selections.
- Make a day of it and get out of the City. Take Dad for a drive down the 101 to Redwood City for the freshest lobster this side of Maine! Plus he can sample a bunch of microbrews straight from Maine on tap at Old Port Lobster Shack.
- Every man loves a big juicy steak with a nice bottle of red wine to wash it down. Watch the video for the restaurant Circa – tell me it doesn’t ooze masculinity!
- Although they would like to have us believe otherwise, Dads aren’t perfect. They were once young too. And sometimes when you’re young, you do dumb stuff – like get a tribal tattoo back when it was cool. You know they’ve been wanting to get rid of it for awhile, so help a brother out and make an appointment for Tattoo Be Gone at Serenity MedSpa. Get a free consultation when you mention this video.
- His body is aching from the grind of getting older and working every day. His bulging muscles could use a massage – well, maybe his muscles aren’t “bulging”, but I’m sure they’re still aching. So book him an appointment to visit Leon Bucsit of Body & Sole. To help out your wallet, you can book Dad a 90-minute massage for the 60-minute massage price, which is $60!
- Beer, beer, and more micro-brewed beer – take Dad to Thirsty Bear for beer and Spanish tapas. And a bonus – there’s a free live Flamenco show this and every Sunday at Thirsty Bear! So grab a brew, order some paella, kick back and enjoy the show!
